IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva voiced support for the US’ efforts to provide financial aid to Argentina ahead of the latter’s midterm elections scheduled for October 2026, as Washington and Buenos Aires explore options for assistance to President Javier Milei’s government. Georgieva said she discussed US’ plans with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, which may include using America’s holdings of IMF Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) to help Argentina. Economy Minister Luis Caputo is in Washington to pursue talks over a potential $20bn US swap line, though details remain unclear. Argentina owes the IMF about $55bn, and the SDR loan could help stabilize its finances or repay part of that debt. The assistance push follows Milei’s political setbacks and aims to bolster his government before elections, even as questions remain about Argentina’s policy commitments and its ongoing $18bn swap line with China.
Argentina dollar jumped by 2-4 points across the curve, for instance its 5% 2038s rose by 4.7 points to trade at 54.2, yielding 17.9%
