SoftBank is in talks to invest up to $25bn in OpenAI, the owner of ChatGPT, as it continues expanding into the AI sector. This potential investment could range from $15-25bn and may also help fund OpenAI’s involvement in the Stargate project, a joint venture between Oracle, OpenAI, and SoftBank. Stargate aims to secure the US’s lead in the global AI race and could involve up to $500bn in investments. SoftBank had already committed $15bn to Stargate and is considering an additional $40bn investment in total for both Stargate and OpenAI. These discussions are still in early stages. The investment comes after news about a new Chinese startup, DeepSeek, disrupting the market with an AI assistant developed more cheaply. Despite initial positive reactions to Stargate, SoftBank’s share price has fallen more than 12% since the DeepSeek announcement.
