Israel’s opposition leader Yair Lapid has proposed that Egypt take control of Gaza for up to 15 years, overseeing a transition toward Palestinian self-governance. He said that in exchange, Egypt’s $155bn external debt could be paid by the international community, without providing details. Lapid said that Egypt faces both financial instability and security threats from Gaza, and that Egypt should assume responsibility for Gaza’s security and civil administration, supported by a UN resolution and regional partners. Egypt and Israel would collaborate on addressing security concerns, and the plan would eventually lead to a reformed Palestinian Authority taking control. Lapid emphasized that Israel should not occupy or annex Gaza, and an Arab nation should manage the region before transitioning to Palestinian governance. He dismissed ideas from Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s government, particularly those involving the annexation of Palestinian territories.
