Issuance volumes of green bonds and loans by corporates and governments have gone past non-green fossil fuel issuances. In 1H 2023, green debt issuances stood at $347.6bn was vs. $233.3bn fossil fuel related financing as per Bloomberg. The compares to $300.1bn in green issuance vs. $316.5bn in fossil fuels during 1H 2022. Most issuances were from financial institutions, governments and some utility companies whilst there were only a few renewables companies, as per April Merleaux, research manager Rainforest Action Network. Bloomberg notes that these fossil fuel companies have seen solid cashflows thanks to the rise in oil prices following the Russia-Ukraine war and thus now have no particular requirement to raise large financing via non-green issuances.
