Argentina’s dollar bonds touched multi-month lows on Monday with the equity index and the peso also falling after local media reports alleged bribery within a government agency tied to President Javier Milei’s administration. Audio recordings surfaced last week, reportedly featuring Diego Spagnuolo, then-head of the disability agency, discussing payments and mentioning Karina Milei, the president’s sister and chief of staff. Spagnuolo has since been dismissed, and authorities raided his residence on Friday as part of an investigation.
While opposition legislators have demanded answers in Congress, the government has not confirmed the authenticity of the audio. Analysts warn that the scandal could erode Milei’s popularity and complicate his reform agenda over the next two years. The scandal comes ahead of local elections in Buenos Aires province and national midterms in October, and Milei called the audio clip as an attack from the opposition ahead of the elections.
Argentina’s dollar bonds have fallen by ~4 points after the audio clip surfaced.
